Necklaces
Packaging Designs!
I’ve been hard at work this past week preparing to send three pairs of ‘Pair-Amour‘ earrings & the brand new ‘Rothberg‘ necklace to a charity event being held this month in Massachusetts to benefit the Michael C. Rothberg September 11th Memorial Scholarship! This charity is very, very close to my heart, so I knew I couldn’t package the jewelry just any ole’ way. I wanted it to be extra special, not just because I love the Rothberg family and admire what they do each year in their son’s memory, but also because I’m hoping these pieces will bring in lots of money to support this wonderful cause!
This is what I’ve come up with for the earrings and I’m very pleased with how it turned out! The earrings come on cards featuring the Build Love logo set against a backdrop of a bright girly pink Lego platform. On the back you’ll see the name of the piece in my own unique handwriting – I drew the name out by hand in thick, artist-quality ink, scanned it, then recreated it on the computer in bright, bold white with a cute pink shadow. And of course, there’s information there to show that the earrings are made from sterling silver & silver-plated beads!
For the lucky winners, each set of earrings will be wrapped in striped tissue paper, tied with a chiffon ribbon, and placed inside a silvery white chiffon bag! Then the tags you see in the foreground will be tied around the bag in a dainty bow. I’m awfully proud of the tags! They’re made up of two layers! The bottom layer features the same pink Lego platform, with the name of the earrings and the color. Then on top is special translucent paper, printed with the pink heart-shaped Build Love logo! Each of these are cut into rectangles with rounded corners (those were a bit tricky to cut out by hand!) I just love the way they turned out, although the whole translucent effect didn’t show up too well in photographs, given how shiny the paper turned out after being laminated. So you’ll just have to trust me, the effect is absolutely gorgeous!
I’m still working on the last few finishing touches for the necklace’s package, because I want that one to be the absolute best of all. I’ll be posting pictures of that hopefully within the next couple of days. But I just couldn’t wait to post these! I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts! I’m hoping to use very similar ideas for the packaging once the Build Love collection has been officially launched and in stores. So of course, I’ll need your feedback to perfect it!
Oh, and I’ll have pictures of everything all gift wrapped inside the chiffon bags soon! I literally just finished that about fifteen minutes ago! But eep, I’ve been up all night hard at work and I’m about ready to crash!
Thanks! And wish us all luck at the charity’s silent auction this year!
The Rothberg Necklace
They say ‘the third time’s the charm’. I think they might be on to something, because I think the third Build Love necklace is the most charming yet!
Yes, those really are Legos! The Rothberg necklace features Legos that really look more like crystal or glass than a child’s plaything!
The centerpiece of this necklace features two crystal clear… minifig heads! Those cute little Lego people we all played with as children now adorn this work of art. The two minifig heads are held in place by three silver-plated beads with elaborate cut-outs, dangling from a swirl of silver-plated wire. Surrounding this are two translucent purple Lego “nose cones”. All of this is strung on a 16″ sterling silver chain, which has been graced with ten genuine amethyst gemstones.
Legos and semi-precious gems, together at last!
This necklace was inspired by and created for the Michael C Rothbeg September 11th Memorial Scholarship. It will be auctioned off on May 26, 2011 to benefit the scholarship fund which honors of the memory of Michael Craig Rothberg, whose life was tragically cut short on September 11, 2001. On that fateful morning, Michael was in his office on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center where he worked for Cantor Fitzgerald as managing director of program trading. Michael was an extraordinary man with a generous heart. Each year, in his memory, three students from Michael’s high school alma mater receive scholarships to aid them in their pursuit of a college education.
I met the Rothberg family through pure chance, but have come to love them as if they were a part of my own family. A few years ago, on the anniversary of September 11th, I volunteered for a blogging project which each year writes tributes to the two-thousand, two hundred and ninety-six victims who died on that awful day. I was randomly assigned Michael’s name & I reached out to his parents to receive their blessing on the tribute I had written to their beloved son. We have since grown very close and each year I do what little I can to support the scholarship fund Michael’s family and friends created in his honor.
Originally I was only planning on sending three pairs of the ‘Pair-Amour’ earrings to be auctioned at the annual dinner to benefit the scholarship fund. But as I sat in my bed, working to create each pair of earrings, I was suddenly struck with inspiration. I instantly started working on the necklace, thinking about Michael, his parents, and his sister. The necklace came together so quickly, so easily, and it really turned out so beautifully.
Since the necklace was inspired by thoughts of Michael, I simply had to name it after him. I really hope it brings in a lot of support for the scholarship fund at the silent auction.
I’m so very proud to have this piece in the inaugural Build Love collection. To me, it represents such true heart, meaning, and love. What better way to truly build love in this world, than to remember those who have meant the most to us?

Shop-a-Holic Pendant
The minute I saw this rather unique Lego piece, the idea for this shopping bag-shaped pendant jumped right into my head. It’s elegant in its simplicity, but that subtlety imparts a very strong, powerful message…I love to shop!!
Although really, what woman doesn’t? This has become my favorite go-to necklace – it’s lightweight, so it’s perfect for everyday wear. It’s dainty and cute, but bright and cheerful at the same time. It encompasses three of my greatest loves: I love shopping, I love jewelry, and I love Legos. What could be better?
In the future, I’ll also be making a version of this pendant as a detachable slider pendant, so that you can add it to your favorite chain, choker, or even a brooch. To start, I plan on making these available in two colors – the purple shown in the pictures, as well as a bright, graphic white. I like the white because it looks smashing with the pink flower stud on the front. I also have lots of fun ideas for other pieces to put on the front of these shopping bags, but you’ll just have to wait and see what I come up with next to further customize these cute little Lego shopping bags!
In the meantime, enjoy these photos of the Shop-a-Holic Pendant! Hope you enjoy!
Heather’s Heart
I’d like to introduce you to the first Build Love prototype, the necklace that started it all – Heather’s Heart! I originally developed the idea for this necklace several years ago. I sketched it out after finding a specific specialty piece one day whilst playing Legos with my nephews. The thought crossed my mind that if I combined two of those pieces in just the right way, voila, they formed a darling heart!
But it wasn’t until last year that I finally managed to make my dream a reality. I decided to finally take this idea and turn it into reality when I realized they might make good birthday/Christmas presents for my three sisters-in-law. But the more I worked on this necklace design, the more I fell in love with it! And the more I played with the Legos, the more ideas sprang to mind for even more Lego-inspired jewelry! Once again, I was bitten with the Lego-building bug!
At the moment, these necklaces are only available via special order. I make each of them by hand, suited to precisely your heart’s desire. If you’d like one for yourself, check out the Purchase section to learn how!
And of course, keep an eye on BuildLove.net for the upcoming Build Love Jewelry Collection!
